FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Darrelle Revis looked straight ahead and spotted the reporter standing behind his right shoulder.I can see him right now without looking at him, New Englands star cornerback said, smiling at writers and cameras at his locker. Its a God-given talent.Baltimore wide receiver Steve Smith will try to evade that amazing vision — forward, backward or sideways — when the Ravens visit the Patriots in a divisional playoff game Saturday. But if Revis sees receivers, hes among the best at keeping them from catching passes.Hes a great corner, Smith said. I dont think you get a one-year deal for, I think, $10 million for being a slouch.Revis actually is making $12 million this season, a wise investment after he was released by Tampa Bay in March. Hes due another $20 million next season, an amount the Patriots almost certainly wont pay, paving the way for possible free agency. But Revis is setting his sights on the Ravens, hoping to reach his third AFC championship game after making back-to-back appearances with the New York Jets in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.Top-seeded New England (12-4) had a first-round bye while sixth-seeded Baltimore (11-6) beat Pittsburgh 30-17 in a wild-card game last Saturday.Revis has made a career of shutting down top receivers by devoting himself to perfecting his technique, studying film, learning from experience and using trickery. Its a chess game out there, said Revis, a Pro Bowler in six of his eight seasons. Youve got to bait the receiver. Sometimes youve got to bait the quarterback.Make them think youre doing one thing, then do something else. Most importantly, Revis has exceptional ability to blanket receivers, seeming to know the route and mirroring it.I think that has something to do with him being a really good basketball player in high school, said Brandon Browner, another outstanding cornerback in his first season with the Patriots. What we do at cornerback is the same thing a point guards doing. He shadows them step by step.So closely, in fact, that some players are reluctant to throw to the receiver Revis is guarding. Not Joe Flacco. The playoff-tested quarterback — 13 touchdown passes and no interceptions in the Ravens current five-game playoff winning streak — doesnt plan to ignore whomever Revis covers. You allow them to dictate something by who they match him on, Flacco said. When weve played against some guys and ... tried to avoid him or done things game plan-wise to get matchups in other places, it usually just takes your attention away from what you should be doing.Besides, the Ravens are the best at picking up big chunks of yardage through the air even when a receiver doesnt make a catch. They led the NFL by drawing 14 defensive pass interference penalties that were enforced this season with six of those drives ending in touchdowns and four in field goals, according to STATS. Torrey Smith led the league with 10 of those calls.Weve got techniques that weve been working on to avoid those, said Revis, who hasnt been penalized for pass interference this season. We recognize these things and we see them on film.A completion and pass interference require the receiver to do the same thing: Get in position to make the catch. You cant really go in there and say, Hey, were going to try to get the pass interference call, Flacco said. Those usually happen by our receivers going out there and playing well and getting themselves in positions to make big plays.Revis probably will be matched up against Steve Smith, a 14-year veteran.Does he age? an amused Revis said. His age is what it is on paper, but hes still electrifying. Is Revis still Revis? Steve Smith said to laughter. I think his ID and his Social Security number would say hes still Revis. He led the Ravens with 79 catches and 1,065 yards receiving then added five for 101 yards in the wild-card win over the Steelers.Revis leads the NFL with 123 passes defenced since his rookie year with the Jets in 2007 and led the Patriots with 14 this season.Hes looking to add to that on Saturday. You have to stay focused. You have to continue to stay patient, Revis said. I just work on technique and thats whats been keeping me around.___AP Sports Writer David Ginsburg contributed to this story.___Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLMats Zuccarello Jersey . It was an easy choice growing up in a home with one TV and two older brothers. When she saw an interview last year with an NBA player and noticed how passionately he talked about trying to improve his embattled union, she wanted to be more than a fan. She wanted to be involved. Now the Washington trial lawyer is the first woman to lead a North American pro sports union. Roberts was elected Tuesday as executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, and shes eager to provide the leadership it needs after a few difficult years. "They were looking for, not a man, not a woman, they were looking for a personality," Roberts said in a phone interview. "I think Im that personality and I intend to be what I have been in my entire practice, singularly devoted to this union. And thats what they were looking for. "Someone, whether it be a boy or a girl, who understood that this was their union, and they intended to run it, and they were looking for someone who appreciated that and was not going to deviate from that." Roberts received 32 of 36 votes at a meeting of players in Las Vegas, defeating tech industry CEO Dean Garfield and Dallas Mavericks CEO Terdema Ussery in the final vote. It capped a long and arduous process to replace Billy Hunter, who was ousted in February 2013. Roberts was one of the finalists initially offered to the rank-and-file during All-Star weekend in February, but the process was re-opened under another search committee at the urging of some players and agents. More than 100 players reconvened in Las Vegas this week, and after some tense moments leading up to the vote, Roberts emerged as the winner. "Obviously, I wouldve preferred that it happen sooner rather than later, but I completely understood when there were questions raised about the process," Roberts said. "Frankly, I would not have wanted them to ignore those questions and not affirmatively address those concerns. I wanted the job in February, but I wanted the job where there would be no questions about the fairness or the process, so I completely endorsed the executive committee to aaddress these questions, and they did and now best I can tell theyre very pleased.dddddddddddd" The players considered more than 300 candidates during their 17-month search before picking Roberts, who has been called the finest trial lawyer in Washington by "Washingtonian Magazine." She said her new job will feature straight, honest talk, just like she delivers to a jury, and the strategizing that made her such a successful lawyer. The search to replace Hunter, who led the NBPA from 1996 until a review of the union was critical of his business practices, leaves players with less than two years to prepare for the next potential collective bargaining talks. Either the union or the league can opt out of the current agreement in 2017. The union has struggled for years with in-fighting and a lack of organization, and the players took a significant cut in their guarantee of basketball-related income -- 57 per cent to about 50 per cent, a drop of hundreds of millions annually in salary costs -- in the contentious lockout in 2011. League revenues are on the rise, a new TV contract is set to be negotiated in 2016 and franchise valuations are skyrocketing. "As far as Im concerned, preparations for CBA negotiations started yesterday," Roberts said. "Its at the top of my list of things that Ive been instructed to begin the process of preparing for, and sure its a lot to do, but Ive never been shy about hard work and long hours, so well get it done. Well be ready." NBA Commissioner Adam Silver congratulated Roberts in a statement, saying he looked forward to working with her "to ensure the continued health and growth of our game." "The partnership between our players and teams is the backbone of the league, and we are eager to continue working with the Players Association to build this relationship," Silver said. The fallout from the lockout and the Hunter ouster left the union reeling. But it also made Roberts want to get involved, which will bring the New York native back home. "The more I thought about it," she said, "the more I thought that would be a great opportunity to do something really important."
